European Open Gardens in Käesalu

Welcome to our historic manor park, where nature and heritage blend into a harmonious whole! This year's European Open Gardens program theme, "Stones in the Garden and Stone Walls," is reflected in various ways throughout our park.

In front of the orangery, there is a flower bed made of massive stones, with its blooming plants supported by heritage species from different eras. These plants tell stories from the past, connecting us to history both aesthetically and meaningfully. In addition, the path to the orangery leads through a magnificent garden gate, and our manor also features a limestone wall typical of Northern Estonia, adding even more historical depth and character to the garden.

In the park's secret corners, a mighty erratic boulder can be discovered, reminding us of the power of nature. The park also features natural wildflower meadows, which in June are filled with daisies and the endless song of birds, creating an enchanting atmosphere. During this time, the common mergansers (Mergus merganser) settle by our ponds to breed, while diligent bumblebees hum through the air, giving the park a lively and soothing breath.

Our park also has an interesting history. At the request of Christian Wilhelm von Gernet, the heart of the manor was expanded with the creation of a new French-style garden section. This project was likely assisted by an architect called to the region from Central Europe by the Stackelbergs of Vääna in 1784, and later by a gardener from Hannover, Friedrich Grosmeyer, who had previously worked in Vienna. Both in Vääna and Käesalu, the stepped structure of the Belvedere Palace park in Vienna served as inspiration, and traces of this design are still preserved in Käesalu to this day.

In addition to the beauty of nature, we offer visitors the opportunity to experience art and culinary delights. In our orangery, there is a small local café where you can enjoy delicacies made from regional ingredients. We have also created an art corner, where visitors can grab an easel, canvas, and painting supplies to capture the experiences and beauty of the park in their own unique way.

Our park is a place where history, nature, and art come together to create a unique blend – come and experience it for yourself!
